Level-1 Cal/Val Working Student (m/f/d)
The Mission
As a Working Student in OroraTech’s Level‑1 (L1) product team, you will play a key role in ensuring the scientific validity and operational reliability of our thermal infrared satellite data. Your primary focus will be the detection and characterization of anomalies—such as dead pixels, artifacts, and other outliers—in Level‑1 radiance products, to ensure they are of the highest quality for downstream applications.
You will develop and refine algorithms, apply image processing techniques, and collaborate closely with the NRT AF (Active Fire) team and other internal stakeholders to maintain robust data quality standards. Your work will directly contribute to the reliability of mission‑critical products used by global wildfire management agencies, commercial partners, and scientific institutions.
What you’ll be doing
L1 Data Quality Monitoring & Outlier Detection
Develop and improve Python-based algorithms to identify noise, dead pixels, and other artifacts in thermal EO imagery.
Apply image processing techniques (e.g., filtering, morphological operations, line detection) to detect and classify spatial and temporal anomalies.
Prototype, evaluate, and refine automated detection pipelines for operational use.
Support the creation and maintenance of curated reference datasets for monitoring instrument health.
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with the L1 team to integrate outlier detection into the broader calibration and validation framework.
Interface with the NRT AF team to ensure L1 products meet the requirements for downstream fire detection and other applications.
Present findings in internal meetings and document methodologies for reproducibility.
