Mechanical Engineer- Working Student (m/f/d)

Working student, Part-time · Munich

The Mission

Munich-based OroraTech is developing a constellation of nano-satellites with thermal infrared cameras for automated wildfire detection, severe weather warnings and many other applications. Following the successful launches of our FOREST-1 mission in 2022, FOREST-2 in 2023, we launched our next satellite, FOREST-3 beginning of 2025, which included an in-house developed payload and BUS. In the same year our first satellite plane, OTC-P1, was launched, followed by our newly designed 16U satellite, GENA-OT, which will be launched end of 2025.

The next step is to improve our satellite design based on all the learnings we have gained and scale up our production to extend our satellite constellation.
We are looking for a talented, hands-on engineer to support us with the design and testing of the new generation of our satellites and payloads. You will be joining a very motivated and highly enthusiastic team of experts in the fields of mechanical, optics, electronics, spacecraft, and software engineering.

What you’ll be doing

As a Mechanical engineer working student you will:

  • Support the design of the mechanical structure within individual satellite or payload projects, such as developing mounting structures for subsystems or optical components, deployment mechanisms, or even an entire satellite.

  • Be involved in all aspects of mechanical design, from initial concept to part designs, assemblies, production drawing generation, and manufacturing orders.

  • Design components for upcoming satellite missions, testing setups, and mechanical ground support equipment.

  • Perform hands-on prototyping, both with 3D printed and metal parts, including supporting first assemblies and debugging, to improve your mechanical design

  • Work closely with our AIT team during development phases and assist with the assembly, integration, and testing of flight hardware.

  • Participate in design reviews, from the concept level down to individual parts.

  • Plan and assist mechanical test campaigns for the satellite and its subsystems, including functional and vibration tests.

Relevant Skills

  • Experience in the design and development of mechanical structures and mechanisms

  • Experience in CAD software, preferably Solidworks

  • Strong hands-on attitude and experience in rapid prototyping technologies (tell us about your side-projects!)

  • Exceptional organizational skills and a structured approach to work

  • Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive mindset

  • Motivation to tackle a wide variety of challenges

  • Fluent English skills
