Hellenic Fire System Launch Event
Advancing Wildfire Intelligence Through Space Technology
On 10 June 2026, distinguished guests from government, industry, emergency services, and the space sector gathered at Anasa City Events in Athens to celebrate the launch of the Hellenic Fire System (HFS).
The evening marked an important milestone in Greece's growing space capabilities and its commitment to leveraging advanced satellite technology to strengthen wildfire detection, monitoring, and response. The event brought together key stakeholders who have contributed to the development of the initiative, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this ambitious project.
Welcoming Guests and Setting the National Vision
The evening began with a reception and welcome drinks, providing an opportunity for attendees to connect and exchange perspectives before the official programme commenced.
Opening remarks were delivered by Effie Papadimitropoulou of OroraTech, who welcomed guests and introduced the significance of the evening's celebrations.
The Greek Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, Scientific Officer, Dimitris Bliziotis of the Hellenic Space Center, and members of the OroraTech leadership team shared their perspectives on the importance of the Hellenic Fire System and its role within Greece's broader space and digital transformation strategy.
Speakers emphasized the national significance of the project, the advancement of Greece's microsatellite capabilities, and the importance of strong collaboration between public institutions and private industry in addressing critical environmental challenges.
From Space to Operations
A key focus of the evening was the practical impact of satellite-based wildfire intelligence.
Presentations explored how space-based thermal monitoring can support operational decision-making, providing firefighting authorities with timely information to improve situational awareness and response capabilities during wildfire events.
Zisoula Ntasious, Fire Colonel at the Hellenic Fire Service, showed how satellite imagery and data are already being used on the ground by firefighters across the country. By adding more satellite observations in the Afternoon Gap, OroraTech is boosting firefighter tools during the hottest and most dangerous part of the day.
Celebrating a Shared Achievement
The formal programme concluded with acknowledgements to the many partners, institutions, and individuals who contributed to the project's success.
A toast led by Ioannis Lantouris and Effie Papadimitropoulou of OrorATech marked the transition into dinner and networking, providing an opportunity for attendees to continue discussions and celebrate this important achievement together.
Looking Ahead
The Hellenic Fire System represents an important step forward in the application of space technology for environmental monitoring and public safety.
The event served not only as a celebration of project completion but also as a reflection of the partnerships, expertise, and shared vision that will continue to drive innovation in Greece's space and wildfire management capabilities for years to come.
